By now, you probably know that the journey towards becoming a successful entrepreneur or network marketer is full of twists, turns, and unexpected detours. Aside from that, there could be a lot of bumps and obstacles in the road too.
However, you are not just the one who has taken this journey. There are many others who have taken it before you as well, and there will be many others who will take this journey after you too. Those who already took the road have lots of tips and clues for those who are about to follow the entrepreneurial path – like you!
You might be familiar with the typical hero’s journey. A small-town average boy or girl meets a stranger who takes him/her to new places where adventures ensue. The story later escalates into a full-blown battle where boy/girl emerges victorious. This is evident in many movies and stories such as Harry Potter and Hunger Games.
The entrepreneurial journey is more or less the same. You start from the bottom and find your path towards success. But unlike the hero’s journey, entrepreneurs usually blaze their own trail.
They don’t rely on a good stranger or a hidden power/strength to win the battle, because entrepreneurs don’t need permission!
Entrepreneurs just get up and do what they have to do. They don’t rely on anyone to fix the situation or blame the economy or government for the low quality of life they have – they become agents of changing themselves.
The moment you decided to live a better life outside of a 9 to 5 job is the moment you answered the call of becoming an entrepreneur! The time you realized that you should not be working 40 hours per week just to live from paycheck to paycheck is the moment you actually “saved” yourself from a life of mediocrity.
You are your own hero in this story, but that is only just the beginning! You still have to take the long and arduous journey of becoming a successful entrepreneur. You will see the 3 main acts or stages of an entrepreneurial journey below – and why understanding these acts matter to you and the entrepreneurs that would follow after you:
This is actually the part where you accept the call of becoming an entrepreneur. This is the moment you decide that you should live and earn money in your own terms – not get locked in a 9 to 5 job for the rest of your life. But you might be thinking by now that most employees might have thought about that at some point too – and yes, many do indeed.
However, what makes the difference here is that you don’t just answer the call, but you actually act on it! It’s easy to say that you want to live life in your own terms and become your own boss, but many people don’t actually risk it.
Choosing to become an entrepreneur has many certainties. Will the business prosper? Will it fail? Could it be enough to sustain your current lifestyle? Many people don’t take the risk because of existing responsibilities such as mortgages, loans, and family care. Some are just afraid to go out of their comfort zone and face unpredictabilities. Others will just have lots of excuses.
Sure, a business could fail. Bill Gates’ first-ever business even failed, but that did not stop him until he found success in Microsoft. Gates answered the call of entrepreneurship and acted on it even after facing failures along the way.
What really sets successful entrepreneurs apart is that they acted on the call and kept going into the entrepreneurial path until they hit success. The others? Well, they failed to start anything in the first place. So by default, they failed (or missed a huge possibility to turn their lives around).
In every business, there are roadblocks and obstacles that can keep you from reaching success. This is also true in network marketing. You might be earning well for several months, and then hit a wall in some months.
There will also be a lot of pressure from your circle. There will be haters (sometimes, they could even be your own friends and family) who will tell you that your business is not going to work, or that you left a potentially rewarding career for life. Of course, these remarks will affect you. But remember, it’s just all part of the process!
One way to face those obstacles right and ease pressure from the naysayers is to have a good mentor. Mentors are basically teachers who can show you the right way in the journey of entrepreneurship. Even Steve Jobs mentored Mark Zuckerberg at one point!
Aside from being a teacher, your mentor could also be a strategist and your honest critic. He/she can help you maneuver difficult situations and try to foresee realistic results for the business.
This part is when you become a mentor yourself! Of course, this presumes that you have reached success in your business already, and has years of experience behind to be considered an authority when it comes to entrepreneurship. Your insights and realizations can be of great help for the future entrepreneurs who might also become the next Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs, or Elon Musk!
Like in every hero’s journey, the protagonist had some mentor to turn to – Harry Potter had Professor Dumbledore, and Khaleesi had Tyrion Lannister before the journey to Westeros in Game of Thrones. After all, life is not a solo act. Everyone needs to meet a mentor at one point in their lives to help them pave a better path for themselves.
