Quick, think about the most successful digital marketer you know of. What do you think makes him successful, is he/she posturing or positioning?
Many successful marketing influencers and digital marketers invest in good “positioning.” It is how they gain better and more efficient results with the same amount of time and effort that they have built throughout their years in the industry.
Many people who work in sales or marketing believe that being the “alpha dog” will earn you success. This might be true for some circles, but it does not always work like that in the grand scheme of things.
Do you ever wonder how some people reached a high position after observing that they don’t really possess the required skills and character to be in such a leadership position? These are the ones who are “posturing.” Usually, these are the people who believe that being the “alpha” helps them succeed in the industry.
Marketers who are good at posturing are actually great in dealing with people – this helps them achieve high positions in a short span of time. However, if you observe closely, you will see that they lack substance.
Most of the time, their knowledge about the industry is very limited, and they will just rely on other people to do the technical stuff for them. They may thrive in their current workplace, but beyond that – they may not achieve any kind of recognition. This is because the actual substance comes from good positioning. This is why you will see that many successful online marketers and influencers are not generally the alpha type.
Positioning means that you provide value and knowledge to your people. This is the kind of leader who may or may not be charismatic, but they do tend to lead with the right attitude and skills. Essentially, they make good coaches, mentors, or trainers.
Sure, you may know all the tools and processes well enough to position yourself as a credible and knowledgeable marketing influencer. However, to maintain that good positioning, you have to keep yourself updated with new tools and trends too.
Marketing is an ever-changing game, especially on the Internet. It is important to constantly lookout for new ways to do things and innovate. If you want people to follow your lead, you must take the lead and be ahead of every step.
