If you are a member of a well-established and long-running network marketing company, chances are, they don’t embrace online marketing too well. In fact, your upline may even forbid you from posting about it on Social Media or blogs.
Like any company, they can always restrict the use of their brand name and logo, but then again, how are you going to grow your network if you don’t go out there and market yourself? Long-time networkers might feel uneasy about digital marketing, but for some of us, doing networking the traditional way (via events, meetups and hyped up presentations) is not really effective anymore. And the worst part is, they just cost too much time and resources! But for traditional networkers, the negativity usually comes from the lack of understanding of how online marketing and digital tactics work. Basically, it is just a big fear of change.
Recruiting and online network marketing is a very effective strategy, but how can you get past your upline’s stinginess and ultimately, your networking company’s stringent restrictions? Well, you can by:
The company can restrict you from using the company logo, their brand name, and any logo or trademark that is related to the company. However, they can’t restrict you from marketing yourself, right?
So the golden rule now is to not mention the company at all when you are doing online marketing and recruitment. In fact, the networking company cannot essentially restrict you from creating a new business, right?
So how do you establish yourself as a brand? You can create a huge following by establishing yourself as a life coach or financial coach. Start by sharing useful financial tips on Social Media, offer inspirational and life advice that people would love to hear whenever they need motivation.
Once you establish a huge following, you can then propose some avid followers to check out a great opportunity (just don’t mention the company name to avoid breaking the rules). Make it more personal. Instead of saying “this company can help you,” tell them “I can help you” instead. That’s not just compliant, but also more attractive as well, because your leads will feel secure and safe that you are with them in this journey.
You can establish a new business using yourself as a brand. Well, you can actually venture out to a new business, but make sure that you don’t get involved in another networking company. Most networking companies only allow exclusive distributorship, and they might not take it kindly if you cross-recruit people from your leads!
The beauty of online marketing and recruitment is that you can use different types of platforms simultaneously. You can use Social Media, email marketing, or even establish a blog or website! So the takeaway here is to make use of several platforms. Social Media alone has many options – don’t limit yourself to just Facebook! You can use LinkedIn and Twitter too.
Another important thing here is to be consistent with your branding. If you present yourself as a financial adviser or life coach, avoid posting anything that is unrelated to it. Stick to your messaging, but make sure that your branding also gives way for recruitment and business purposes.
Being a financial adviser will make that easy because the business opportunity of your networking can be the “solution” you’ll offer to people who are looking for financial freedom.
Let’s say you successfully created a huge following online and managed to recruit more people into your network. And suddenly, an upline or your networking company says that what you’re doing is forbidden. Despite bringing in more people and customers and complying with their rules, you still got called out. Worse, you might even be threatened to be taken out from the distributorship – and yes, all these sounds unfair.
It might be unfair, but don’t beat up yourself for too long. It is surely hurtful especially if your upline is a long-time friend, but taking all these too personally will only affect your personal strategies that were working so well!
So if you do reach this point, don’t be afraid to step out of the networking company. Mind you, you’re not going to lose everything! There are thousands of other networking companies out there who will welcome an efficient and hardworking person like you. Moreover, you can even start your own business by continuing whatever brand you have established and just growing it by yourself.
