In the age of Social Media, haters can be easily spotted everywhere. Although celebrities and public figures are the usual targets of haters, even normal people like you and me can even have a fair share of haters too (from our own circle).
No matter what achievements you get, or how hard you work on a degree, career or business, there are always people out there who have something negative to say. Naysayers who just belittles every achievement you have and act like a gray cloud over you.
No one likes to have negative people in their life, but the thing is, they cannot be entirely avoided. It’s a fact of life – there are always people who will say something negative about you or attempt to pull you down from an achievement.
What you can do however is know how to deal with them. But before we go down to the “how”, let’s first explain the “whys.” So why do some people hate so much?
It’s a reflection of who they are, and well, their life choices too!
When people see you doing the things that they didn’t have the chance to do because either they are very afraid, unwilling to take risks, incompetent, unskilled or just plain lazy, then they will certainly get salty about it.
While they were making numerous excuses for their failures, you were out there working for (or living) the dream. Some people don’t like it when other people are out there claiming their own success because they want everyone else to stay in the same circle of misery as them. That’s basically their place – a circle of fears, doubts and insecurities.
So how to deal with them? There are only 3 ways:
This is one of the best ways to deal with a hater – especially the purely unreasonable ones. Ignoring haters give you more peace of mind and will cost you less stress (mentally and emotionally). Don’t get carried away with their hateful and negative words that really don’t help you or your business at all. You don’t have to get worked up over words that will gain no impact on your personal life and business.
So whenever you see a hateful post or “basher” on your page, ask yourself if something good will come out in case you decide to engage with them. If it is a lost cause, then better spend your energy elsewhere.
Now, this seems totally contradictory to the first one, but then again, you have to remember that this list should not be followed chronologically or concurrently. These are just 3 ways to deal with haters, not 3 steps!
So why appreciate them? Because having haters mean that you are actually doing something right. It means that you’re sending a message that they find uncomfortable and inconvenient and that they felt a little threatened.
In this life, you’re not going to please everyone and that’s fine! But a hater’s attitude makes you more self-conscious, and it can even help you drive your energy towards becoming better. Their constant belittling is nothing compared to big and small achievements you collect along the way.
Some haters are not just unreasonable, vicious-spouting individuals, some of them might have been offering constructive criticism that is just worded crassly. One way to deal with them is to listen to the message. In fact, you might be able to get notes for self-improvement from them.
We also need to see the negative feedback to be able to check ourselves. Nothing good ever comes out from an environment where you are surrounded by yes-people, because you will never learn to improve with them. A group of sycophants will also hinder you from seeing potential problems and plot holes in your business – possibly leading you to fail among growing competitors.
The bottom line, you should first practice some critical thinking. You can ignore a bunch of haters (those that are simply hateful and troll-like), but you can appreciate and listen to reasonable ones. And always remember that having haters is not a bad thing – it is simply a part of life!
