Doing network marketing the traditional way required a lot of patience and grit. Some were at it for over 10 years before finally making a 5 to 6 figure income. While that kind of dedication is pretty admirable, it must also be said that out of that success, a number of networkers also gave up after yielding not many results during their first 2 years in the business.
Traditional network marketing is prone to using offline tactics that aren’t really going to work well in the modern era. Success is slow-paced, and it carries with it a lot of baggage that distracts networkers from actually working their way towards a higher income.
One issue is the thing with recruitment and downlines. In traditional networking, it would always look like as if the people from the lower end of the organization are subsidizing the success of the higher-ups (upline). While the downlines do the actual work of getting other people to join the business or sell products, uplines just enjoy a cut from the profits without necessarily doing anything other than maintaining their sizable network or recruiting 1 or 2 new people every now and then.
It is almost the same as a corporate hierarchy. In corporations, shareholders and executives are at the top enjoying a huge profit from the shares they hold, but employees (who actually deal with customers and even create the product) are simply promised a stable income and job security – without a chance of earning more unless they get promoted to a higher position. To put it in a different way, employees are also subsidizing the success of their shareholders and executives.
In network marketing, the same is very true. Uplines are benefiting from the hard work of their downlines and that is very evident in traditional, offline marketing. And this is where most of the baggage comes from.
Downlines will resent working too hard seeing that their uplines are the ones who are largely benefiting from it. Some uplines, on the other hand, don’t even realize that their success is actually subsidized by their downlines. They think they deserve it for “working hard.” Naturally, there will be a lot of negative emotions which can lead to a toxic and unhealthy environment. In fact, most people also leave the organization because of this.
Now the question is, are you even aware of this? Are you aware that you are subsidizing the few in your organization? Or if you are an upline, are you aware that your success came at the expense of other people’s hard work? You might be in denial at first – that’s okay. But if you think long and hard, you might be able to get the bigger picture.
If you are tired of subsidizing someone else’s network marketing success. What should you do? Here are a few tips to help you out:
Most likely, your upline has taught you everything you need to know. The network may have provided you with books, manuals and other training materials for you to study on – but the question is, are you actually reading and absorbing these? Are you taking in everything and acting on it?
What sets successful people apart (including your upline) is that they were not afraid to take the leap. They absorb all the knowledge, skills and actually transform them into action plans. So how many manuals have you left unread in the coffee table? How many business books have you shelved despite saying that you will read them in your free time? Maybe you need to finally revisit those and take advantage of the opportunities that are just waiting to be unlocked!
If you’re feeling that the networking organization you were in has become too toxic and burdensome, you can always choose to quit and join a new one. The choice is and will always be yours. If you think you need to sharpen a new skill set, go! If you’re thinking to renew your strategy, then do it! The options are many – and they are just waiting for you to decide.
If you really think that your networking business is not working for you, or if you really want to leave traditional networking for good, you also have the choice to go digital. If you are feeling that you are not in the right vehicle and environment, then it is because it is not for you. So why not try a new avenue and a more modern approach? Why not try to break in into a new digital networking business?
If you’re worried about making the digital shift, take comfort in the fact that there is a whole community out here to give you support and advice. Relax, you’ll learn the basics and go through the ropes of digital networking in no time! But for now, you must make a decision. Will you remain among the 90% who subsidize the success of the top 10%? Or are you willing to make a significant change and be in charge of your own path?
