Stress is inevitable when you choose to become an entrepreneur. Pressures from deadlines, expenses, and finances are already enough to wear you out. In the worst cases, entrepreneurs get burned out due to fatigue and stress – which negatively affects the business even more.
Reducing and alleviating your stress can help guarantee higher productivity, focus, and efficiency. With reduced stress levels and more motivation, you’ll be on top of your game in no time. You will be able to achieve more goals and reach milestones within a set timeline.
But first, how can you reduce stresses that are caused by your business? How can you even find the time and draw the line between work and play? Well, we got that problem solved for you. Reducing stress does not necessarily mean that you should go out to the gym or yoga center and spend an hour there – nope.
All you actually need to do is breathe. Yes, breathe! This is because you need to supply your brain with lots of good oxygen. An improved blood and oxygen circulation in your brain increases adrenaline and decrease cortisol levels (the hormone that is produced when we feel stressed and depressed).
With improved oxygen circulation in the brain, this allows you to be more focused and productive in whatever you need to achieve. Most importantly, you don’t have to go far to make sure your brain gets lots of oxygen – you can simply do the breathing exercises below at home or at the office (during coffee breaks):
This is very easy. Basically, what you should do is to inhale from your nose while looking up at the ceiling, then exhale through your mouth as you bring your chin down. Do it a couple of times (at least six times) slowly, and take as much time as you need. However, remember to breathe in correctly through your diaphragm – breathing down all the way through your navel/stomach.
Now, this method of breathing is quite popular, and you may have done this a couple of times already. Again, it’s simple. Just inhale deeply and slowly up to the count of 4, then hold your breath for 16 seconds, and exhale slowly up to the count of 8.
Tony Robbins recommends people to do this at least 3 times a day, with 10 breaths per session. It won’t take much time, you can do this while you lie in bed in the evening and at the moment you wake up, and during your lunch break at the office.
This is called “alternate nostril” breathing because it is what you’ll literally do. First, put your right index finger on your right nostril (pinch it and make sure the nostril is closed), then inhale deeply through your left nostril alone (for 6 seconds). Hold your breath for 3 seconds, change fingers (put your left index finger to your left nostril to close it) then exhale through your right nostril (again, for 6 seconds). Repeat the process as much as you like, but make sure to alternate your breathing.
The point here is to “exercise” or “oxygenize” both sides of your brain. As you know, our brain has two sides – the left and right (and each of us has a dominant side). Alternate nostril breathing will help balance both sides of your brain and ensures that it gets the blood and oxygen it needs to function well.
This is much easier than the previous method. All you have to remember is that every step constitutes only four seconds. So first, you inhale slowly up to the count of four, hold your breath up to the count of four, and exhale slowly up to the count of four. Repeat for as long as you like, and that’s it!
If you’re looking for a bit of action, you can do the bounce and shake. Again, this is super easy. All you have to do is stand up with your feet apart, bounce or jump up and down while shaking your hands simultaneously. Stand and bounce, then go down at your side or the waist (in squat position), then go up once again. You can also do some breathing exercises while you are at it. Repeat this for four to five times to feel more energized.
All these breathing methods can also be used before you go into a meeting or when you are about to meet a client or prospect. Breathing in and out can also help lessen your anxiety and tension, and can help you clear up your mind. You may also choose to go out to a park or open area if you want to breathe in and out in a better environment.
