First of all, this article is not an anti-MLM post. In fact, this applies to just about any type of home business. Whether you are in network marketing, direct sales, multi-level marketing, eCommerce, or what have you. As long as your business is done from the comfort of your home, this applies! However, it is no secret that a lot of people automatically assume that you are in an MLM or direct sales if you say that you are building your own home business. We can’t blame them. Tons of MLM people keep shilling their wares online and this has annoyed a lot of consumers to no end. Hence, here are the top 2 illusions that you need to stop in order to avoid such pitfalls. And yes, this applies whether you are in an MLM or not.
1. The Illusion That EVERYONE Needs/Wants Your Product
This is the major illusion that a lot of entrepreneurs and networkers seem to have. Yes, your product might be brilliant, amazing, and oh-so-revolutionary, but the thing is, it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. Every product is catered to a certain group of people. Sure, everyone needs shampoo – but not everyone wants the same brand for it. Even big companies like Apple cannot sell their iPhones to everyone. That’s because there is a thing called preference. We all have our own preferences, and that certainly affects our buying decisions too.Another thing is your perceived value of the product. For you, it might be an all-around fix but not all people would recognize or appreciate that. Now, most home-based entrepreneurs make the mistake of being overzealous about their products. To a point that it’s literally the only thing, they can offer in a conversation or on any problem. Need something to cure depression or anxiety? Here’s my product. Need to lose weight? Here’s my product. Want to conceive? Here’s my product. Need to cure a stomach ache? Use my product! See, that just sounds silly. Sure, the product may have some value to you – but not to everyone. Best to shake off the illusion that your product is God’s answer to everything and keep yourself grounded to its actual uses and benefits! It’s less annoying, and people will not think that you are merely overpromising things.
2. The Illusion That EVERYONE Is A Prospect
This goes hand in hand with the first illusion. If you have the illusion that everyone needs your product, then you will also assume that everyone is your prospect. WRONG. Not everyone is a prospect. Even if your mentor will tell you that, don’t listen to him/her. If you tell any entrepreneur that you think everyone is a prospect, then you will certainly get laughed at. In fact, this illusion is what makes networking people get little respect for, because they tend to hound every family, friend, and acquaintance to buy their products (just because they think everyone is a prospect).Again, every person has preferences and unique buying decisions. Any entrepreneur, big or small, has to identify their target market. Your target market is the kind of people who would need your product and see its value in the same way that you do. Being a good entrepreneur also means that you are good at identifying your market. Now break all these illusions and start to shift your focus! You will later see that everything will be much easier when you do so. You only need to reserve your energy for the right prospects, and you won’t be alienated by your friends and family! It’s a win.
